In Islam, the meaning of Qirat is “Reading or recitation” of the Holy Quran. There are ten (10) recognised schools of Qirat, each deriving its name from a noted Holy Quran recitator. Inside the Qirat, there are two orderings:
Mutawatir | The transmission is so wide:
There are 7 Mutawatir Qirat: (1) Nafi (2) Abu Amr ibn al-Ala (3) al-Kisai (4) Ibn Amir (5) Hamza’ (6) Asim (7) Ibn Kather
Mashhur: less wide in their transmission.
There are 3 Mashhur: (1) Abu Jafar (2) Khalaf (3) Yaqub
